Working with a deity can be a bit odd at first, especially if you're like me and come from a complicated religious background. But after a while that oddness goes away and is replaced with a sense of fulfillment. This can be said no matter which deity you choose, or alternatively, which deity chooses you. For me, it was Loki; the Norse trickster god. My experiences with him have thankfully all been good ones, and I always look forward to working with him whether it be in spell work, tarot readings, or pendulum readings. In this article, I'll be taking a deep dive into my personal experiences and relationship with Loki.

While reading this, please keep in mind that everyone's experiences with one deity will vary. So things that I tell here about my experiences with Loki may not happen to you. You may have opposite experiences. He may not present himself in the same form to you that he presents to me. He might not treat you the same. So please, when and if you decide to connect with him, do not put him in a box and expect him to behave one way when he will certainly act another.

Everyone has their own unique story for how they came across Loki. It can be in dreams, books, or even in film. I'll admit, while this way of meeting Loki is often looked down upon by gatekeepers, I discovered Loki through Marvel. And that is perfectly okay. Many others that I've met have also met him this way. It started as merely an interest in a character. But as I got older, read books on a more accurate depiction of Loki, and grew closer to the idea of practicing something after years of recovering from the abuse that I experienced and witnessed inside the Christian church, it became a deeper connection. Though it wasn't until earlier this year when I started practicing witchcraft that I decided to contact him.

For me, reaching out to a deity that wasn't the Christian God was terrifying. You'd think that I would have abandoned any fears of punishment from their God when I abandoned the religion, but unlike most who leave Christianity I still believe that the Christian God is very much real, as I do with the gods of all religions. The fear and trauma that the church left behind in me even after I de-indoctrinated myself was, and still is, very strong. I managed to stay persistent with my desires to pursue Loki despite the fear and the outcome was enlightening.

For all my life I had been told that curiosity in other religions was a one-way ticket to damnation in hell. I was told that no other gods were real besides the Christian God and that if I thought I was speaking to one, it was just an evil voice in my head that didn't really exist. For something they thought to be unreal, they sure did fear it a lot. While communicating with Loki for the first time through a pendulum, I couldn't stop thinking of those teachings. I wondered if they were actually right, even after years of believing against it. But the calming nature of the surrounding energy when I spoke to him told me otherwise; nothing of an evil nature could have possibly made me feel so at ease. He answered my questions for an hour before I inevitably ran out of questions to ask. I started to feel the fears planted in me from Christianity slip away, albeit only a little.

Months later, I still speak to him regularly. I go to him when I'm stressed, especially. I don't speak to him through a typical prayer, just through forms of divination like tarot and pendulums. Sometimes, he'll present himself in dreams, just not lucid ones. There's no etiquette, no rituals that I have to do before I speak to him. But, like I said above, everyone's experience with a deity will differ. He may prefer for you to do something a little more ritualistic, he may not. You just have to find out for yourself.

As for our dynamic, it's not what many would expect. I do not worship Loki, nor any god for that matter. I'm not Lokean or a follower of Asatru. I do not pray to Loki for him grant me things or to influence an outcome. He doesn't tell me how my lifestyle should be. I do not have a shrine or an altar specifically for Loki, although he's had influence in my altar choices such as an incense holder that I painted for him and a tiny metal snake that makes me think of him. By saying all of that, what I'm trying to say is I'm not his subject and he is not my god. We work together for what we each want. He gives me insight and the occasional blessing and in return I'll do something as simple as burning an incense of his choice to more complex tasks such as casting a spell that he asks for. In simpler terms, I scratch his back and he scratches mine.

As for this aspect of our relationship, I catch a lot of heat. Many people label me as a faker for this, because we don't see him in the same form when we dream. Most people I speak to who work with or worship Loki will describe him as a burly, ginger-haired mountain of a man. And most of the time, this is how he looked the first time they came across him. For me, the first time I had seen a visual depiction of Loki was when I saw the Avengers when I was around ten. Thus, this was how I imagined him for years before I was able to crack open a Norse history book. So when he appeared in his first dream of mine, he looked like the Marvel rendition of Loki, because that was what was familiar to me. I wouldn't have recognized his "true" form as him, so he gave me something I knew. Another reason is simply the abilities of the human brain. Our brains cannot invent a whole new face. Every face in our dreams is one that we've seen before, even if it was just someone we walked by in the store. If I had never seen this "true" form of Loki, how would I be able to see it in a dream? In my experience, this is where gatekeepers fall short in defending their actions. They can argue against the experiences and beliefs that differ from their own, but they sure as hell can't argue against science.

To sum it all up, my experiences with Loki have been nothing short of intuitive and positive. If one day, Loki comes to you and wants to be a part of your practice, I would highly recommend letting him in. Unless, that is, your own intuition warns you against it. The craft is yours and you're free to practice it however you see fit.
